VLC converts MP4 to MP3 on your desktop without an internet connection. Free. Open source. Runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. When an online tool is not an option, this gets the job done.

How to Open the VLC Converter

The converter lives in a different menu depending on your operating system:

  • Windows and Linux: Media > Convert / Save (keyboard shortcut Ctrl+R)
  • macOS: File > Convert / Stream

Once you open this window, add one or more MP4 files by clicking the Add button or dragging files into the list.

Choosing the Correct Audio Profile

After you have added your file, click the Convert / Save button. A new window appears where you select the output configuration. Choose the entry named Audio - MP3. This tells VLC to extract only the audio and encode it as MP3.

Adjust the Audio Quality

Click the spanner/wrench icon next to the configuration name. In the settings window, go to the Audio codec tab. There you can change the audio bitrate. Set it higher or lower according to your needs.

Setting the Destination File (and Why the Extension Matters)

In the same window, choose a destination folder and type a filename. This is where many people run into trouble: VLC does not always add the .mp3 extension itself. If you type only a name like “song” and leave off the extension, the file saves as “song” with no extension. Your operating system may not recognize it as an audio file. Some media players will refuse to play it.

Always type the full filename ending in .mp3. For example, type song.mp3. Once you have done that, click Start. The conversion begins and a progress bar appears.

Fixing Silent Output (the “vlc Mp3 No Sound” Problem)

Another common complaint: the converted MP3 file plays but has no sound. This happens because the source video uses an audio track that VLC does not map correctly with the default configuration. The fix is simple:

  1. Open the converter again (Media > Convert / Save or File > Convert / Stream).
  2. Add your video file.
  3. Click the spanner/wrench icon next to the Audio - MP3 entry.
  4. In the settings, go to the Audio codec tab.
  5. Make sure the checkbox for “Audio” is ticked. If it is unchecked, the output will have no audio.
  6. Still in the Audio codec tab, check that the bitrate is set to a value you want.
  7. Click Save, then set your destination filename (ending in .mp3), and click Start.

If the Problem Persists

Try selecting a different audio track from the source video. In the converter window, before clicking Start, look for an option like “Edit selected profile” or the spanner icon, then check the “Audio” tab for a track selection. Some videos contain multiple audio streams, and VLC may pick a silent one by default.

Batch Converting Multiple Files in VLC

VLC can convert several files in one session. Add all the MP4 files you want to convert in the initial file selection window. Then click Convert / Save. Choose the Audio - MP3 entry and set the destination folder. There is a limitation: VLC applies the same output filename to every file unless you rename each one manually. The naming and settings are less convenient than a dedicated batch converter. For a small number of files it works fine; for many files, you may prefer a tool built for batch processing.

VLC Vs. an Online MP4 to MP3 Converter

VLC is a capable offline tool, but it has its quirks: the missing extension issue and silent output can waste time if you are not aware of them. If you prefer a no-install alternative, bestmp4tomp3converter.com offers a free online MP4 to MP3 converter. It supports bitrates from 96 to 320 kbps and has a 300 MB limit per job. No software to download, no file extension worries, and the audio is extracted directly in your browser.
